Metroid is a series of exploration-based platforming games created by Nintendo. The series is set on various planets in a science fiction setting, and mostly revolves around the adventures of bounty hunter Samus Aran, as she battles the Space Pirates to stop them from using the titular Metroids for their personal gain. The name "Metroid" is derived from the words "metro" and "android".

In 2002, the first 3D Metroid title, Metroid Prime, was released. Metroid Prime would go on to receive two additional games, which have since been compiled into a single "trilogy" release, and three spin-off titles.
