Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ピカチュウ Pocket Monsters Pikachu) was the fourth main series game in the Pokémon series, the third to be released internationally. In Japan, it served as an adaptation of the tie-in animated series that began shortly after the release of the initial games, Pokémon Red and Green, after third version Pokémon Blue had already been released. Internationally, it serves as the third version of the first generation storyline, as Red, Green, and Blue had been combined into the paired Pokémon Red and Blue. In all locations, the striking difference between it and the earlier versions is the lack of choice in a starter Pokémon: where Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle were able to be chosen by players of Red, Green, or Blue in all releases, only one Pokémon is available to start off in Yellow: series mascot Pikachu.
