The gameplay of ''A Link Between Worlds'' returns to the style of top-down ''The Legend of Zelda'' games. Rather than have Link collect items in the dungeons, Link instead is able to rent them from the character Ravio and later buy them, allowing him to access the dungeons in any order. In addition, rather than have separate ammunition counts for bombs and arrows, every item instead uses the same magic meter; Link cannot use any items if it is depleted.

Later in the game, Link gains the ability to turn into a painting and slide across walls at will. This ability also uses the magic meter. Link can also use this to travel through special cracks that lead from one world to the other.
