Story

In the game's story mode, the player is a researcher from the Midgar Library, sent to the land of High Lagaard along with his childhood friend Flavio to assist the princess of Caledonia in performing a ritual, the player in the process being dubbed a Fafnir Knight. After the trio head into the ruins, they encounter a powerful monster, but, as part of the ritual, the player completely transforms, becoming more powerful than normal. Upon learning that the player must acquire more power, the party seeks to both complete and figure out the purpose and secrets of the ritual.

Gameplay

Like in the Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, players have the option of playing the game in either Classic Mode (the original game) or Story Mode (preset party with narrative-driven gameplay expanding on the story of the original). Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold, however, is the first game in the series to support multiple save files, allowing for up to nine at once. Other various options have been carried over from Etrian Odyssey Untold as well as from Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, such as the auto battle and command confirmation features. In addition to this, the Force mechanic, seen in the original Etrain Odyssey II, is now a separate command rather than a skill.

The game features a new labyrinth, which is central to the plot of Story Mode, but can also be accessed later into Classic Mode. The Grimoire Stone mechanics have also been updated, allowing players to see what kind of stone they have obtained when they receive one, allowing the party to equip more Grimoire, and boosting a skill even beyond the maximum level.
