The Shin Onigashima series is part of its parent Famicom Mukashi Banashi series; a series of text adventure games inspired by (Japanese) folk-tale. Shin Onigashima is inspired by the Japanese culture of the legendary peach boy "Momotarō", Princess Kaguya, and Onigashima; a legendary island where Oni are said to live.

The series has seen cameos, such as in the form of trophies/spirits/music tracks in the Super Smash Bros. series since Super Smash Bros. Melee.
