The Sonic the Hedgehog series is a third-party series created by Sega.
History
Sonic was created to compete against Mario. The first Sonic game on the Sega Genesis was so successful that many fanboys argued who is better, Mario or Sonic. However, after the Dreamcast lost to Sony's Playstation 2, Sega discontinued the Dreamcast and became a third party company. Since then, there were many Sonic games on Nintendo consoles. There was even a Mario & Sonic series where the two mascots competed in the Olympics. Sonic's popularity got him into the Super Smash Bros. series. In 2013, Nintendo had a deal with Sega to make three Sonic games: Sonic Lost World, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and an unknown Sonic title.
