Miitomo is a free-to-start mobile title released by Nintendo in March 2016, and is the first game developed by Nintendo to be released for mobile devices. While originally planned for a late 2015 launch, it was delayed to early 2016 for business reasons. Users can preregister for the app by signing up for the Nintendo Account and preregistering on the site service between February 17 and launch; doing so allows users to receive an e-mail notifying them of the app's release and earns Platinum Points for the My Nintendo rewards program.

Miitomo is a social application that allows players to create and customize their own Mii avatars and interact with other players around the world. Miitomo must be connected to the internet, and cannot be used offline. Players can either create a Mii from scratch, or import one from their Nintendo 3DS or Wii U using a QR code. Users can interact with their Miis to be asked questions, and the answers will be shared with their friends, who can then comment on their answers. Players can add friends to their friends list using the "face-to-face" method (connecting two mobile devices within range) or through a user's Facebook or Twitter account. With the Miifotos feature, players can take pictures of their own and other players' Miis, edit them with various poses and backgrounds (either pre-loaded or from the user's photo library on their device), and post them to the internet.
Although basic functions are available with the free download, items such as clothing for the player's Miis must be purchased using Miitomo coins, which can be obtained for free in-game through daily bonuses but alternatively can be bought using in-game purchases. Also available is Miitomo Drop, a minigame in which players can win candies, which can be given to friends when they visit to reveal answers, or exclusive clothing items.
