#REDIRECT Nintendo series mascots and main characters
:This article is about Mario, covering exclusively his role as the primary mascot for Nintendo. For the series of games he is in, please see the Super Mario series article. For the character that appears in said series, please check out Mario on Super Mario Wiki.

Mario is the Nintendo mascot that was first created in 1981 in the classic Donkey Kong game. He was born when Shigeru Miyamoto was attempting to make a new protagonist to star in the aforementioned title as a replacement for the game Popeye (which Nintendo lost the copyrights to). Since his debut, Mario has starred in many of his own adventures; especially upon arriving into the Mushroom Kingdom where his own stream of games came into place starting with Super Mario Bros. in 1985.

After starring in Super Mario Bros., he has re-appeared in many other Mario series games. In these games, he can get help from Luigi, or ride his dinosaur friend, Yoshi. Usually, Bowser is the final boss, but in some games, he can team up with Mario to defeat a more important boss than himself.
