Gameplay
Metal Torrent is a top-down shooter with two different types of play with varying challenge, progressing through a maximum of eight stages with either enemies that have set patterns or random enemies. Two ships are also available: the Red Orion, which only loses part of its health when hit and is meant for newcomers to the genre, and the Blue Nova, for more experienced players as it is instantly destroyed when hit. Each ship has a special attack that can be used at the cost of part of their energy bar, displayed on the bottom screen; the Red Orion's clears all bullets, while the Blue Nova's fires a massive laser across the screen. When enemies are defeated, they drop cubes, which can be collected to increase the player's health and build up a chain to increase the score.
Players could also post their high score onto the leaderboard (two for each mode, depending on the ship) using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The leaderboards display the top ten scores, and players can watch replays of their runs.
