The game was originally in development as a Nintendo 64 game, but was later pushed back to be a launch title for the for the Nintendo GameCube, and was delayed again to 2002 after the September 11 attacks. Notably, Eternal Darkness is the first game to be published by Nintendo to receive an M rating from the ESRB.
