Uncover the history that doomed a kingdom and turned a hero down a dark path.

Guide a group of legendary warriors on a journey through the tragic history that doomed a kingdom and drove a hero down a dark path 500 years before the events of the Xenoblade Chronicles™ 2 game. Defend yourself from Malos and his forces using all the fury of this refined battle system, allowing you to fight as both the artificial lifeforms known as Blades and their masters, the Drivers.

Drivers and their Blades can change from the frontlines of combat to the back in order to unleash powerful context-sensitive abilities. Together, you'll fight for the survival of manking, under threat by Malos, who wields the legendary sword, The Monado. To stand a chance, you must master every character's powerful skills including Talent Arts, a strategic element returning from the original Xenoblade Chronicles™ game. By equipping Drivers with new weapons, you can alter their attacks and elemental powers to perform devastating combos. On the long road ahead, you'll rest at camps, cook food, craft items, and share a heart-to-heart with many a traveling companion. Who knows where this twisted journey will lead.

Story

Torna ~ The Golden Country is set 500 years before the events of the main game's story, during the time known as the Aegis War. The nation of Coeia and its Titan have been destroyed and have sunk into the Cloud Sea by the actions of the Malos, a powerful Blade known as an Aegis. As he has made Torna his next destination, Jin and Lora fight alongside Addam and Mythra, the other Aegis, to stop him.

Gameplay

Much of the core gameplay of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is carried over for Torna ~ The Golden Country. The player's party consists of three teams of three characters; while only one can be controlled at a time, the player can swap between each of the three characters freely both in and out of battle, and can swap between teams freely outside of battle. Battles are similar to how they function in the base game, in that players must use auto-attacks to charge a character's Arts, while using Arts will charge the gauge to use a special attack and initiate a Blade Combo. Unlike in the base game, in which only the Driver will attack enemies while their Blades provide passive effects, Drivers and Blades can swap between active and support positions.

Camping is a new feature in this game, combining aspects of the Heart-to-Heart, Inn, and crafting systems of the base game. At set locations, players can have the party set up camp, and can choose to either view party conversations, craft items unique to each character, or go to sleep for the night and adjust character levels.

Development

The Expansion Pass for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was revealed during a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Direct in November of 2017; one of the listed contents that would be included with the pass was a new original story, with an intended release window of fall 2018.[1] A trailer for the story, under the title Torna ~ The Golden Country, was shown during Nintendo's E3 2018 presentation, revealing that it would receive a standalone release alongside being made available for Expansion Pass owners.[2]

At the beginning of development for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the scenario for Torna ~ The Golden Country was initially planned to be included as a part of the main game. However, it was decided that the scope of the story was too large and would require too much time and budget to complete, and the prototype for it was shelved. With the decision to include a new story scenario as part of the Expansion Pass content, it was decided that Torna ~ The Golden Country would be fully developed.[3] Based on player feedback regarding the base game's systems, which many found to be intimidating, several gameplay aspects for the expansion were adjusted and streamlined so that new players could more easily pick up the game; these changes include UI enhancements, additional tutorials and the ability to review them, and the changes to the game's battle system.[4][5] According to director Tetsuya Takahashi, the most difficult aspect of development was balancing the game appropriately for an RPG that would last around 20 hours.[5]

Torna ~ The Golden Country uses a new rendering engine, featuring slight graphical improvements over the base game.[4]
