Number Battle (released in PAL territories as Sujin Taisen: Number Battle) is a digital release of the formerly Japan-exclusive Nintendo DS game Sujin Taisen, released for the DSiWare service in January 2009 in Japan, August 2009 in Europe and Australia, and January 2010 in North America. It is part of the Number Battle series. While scaled down for the Japanese release, the international release of the game retains all of the modes and features of the original Japanese retail version, with some improvements made to the gameplay, such as the game speed and item balance.[1]

Place tiles on a board to score points and battle human or computer opponents. Can you reach the target score first?

From Japan comes NUMBER BATTLE, a board game that invokes the ancient art of feng shui while challenging players to clear the playing field. Take turns against human or computer opponents to reach a target score by placing numbered tiles on the board and linking the arms of each tile in various ways. Watch for the Winds of Change to possibly blow over the board during a battle, resulting in special squares that will score bonus points or affect game play in new ways. Items that aid you in your pursuit of points can also be found, but cost points to use and must be placed strategically. Go it alone in the main Story or Puzzle modes, or battle against up to three opponents from around the world via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You can even learn from your past with History mode, which shows the moves recorded during previous Nintendo WFC contests. This unique combination of puzzle and strategy elements result in an exciting battle of wits—can you guide your Warrior to victory?

Placing Tiles

Players take turns placing tiles that have numbers that range from 1 to 5. On the first turn, players can place and rotate tiles anywhere but after that, tiles must be placed next to tiles of the same color. Players have a chance to get rainbow tiles that can be placed anywhere except next to an opponent's tile unless that space is next to the placing player's tile. Any player can place their tile next to a rainbow tile and use it, so it can be risky using it as it opens you up for sabotage.

Creating Links

To earn points, players must create links by connecting tiles on the board. The tiles' connectors are called arms and 1-4 of them can appear in each of the four directions. There are 4 kinds of links and they depend on the number used for the link or how the links are connected. Multiple links can be activated when completing a link if the conditions are met. Rainbow tiles can be used by anyone to complete a link as long as it connects to the corresponding player's color. The link animations and sounds are associated with an element.

Sequence

Done by connecting tiles with numbers in ascending/descending order. For example, connecting a tile with 2 to a tile with 1 creates a sequence link. 10 points are earned for each tile with a minimum of 20 points and a maximum of 50 points per link. The link is associated with the element of water.

Number

Done by connecting tiles with the same number. For example, connecting a tile with a 1 with another tile with a 1 creates a number link. 10 points are earned for each tile with a minimum of 20 points. The link is associated with the element of lightning.

Loop

Done by connecting tiles in a closed loop. For example, connected tiles in a 2x2 square formation counts as a loop. 10 points are earned for each tile, with a minimum of 40 points. The link is associated with the element of fire.

Lockout

Done by connecting tiles with no open arms. For example, connecting a tile with one arm with a tile with one arm counts as a lockout since there's no openings. 20 points are earned for each tile with a minimum of 40 points. The link is associated with the element of earth.

Items

Players can use items to turn the tides of battle at the cost of points. Only one can be used per turn and cannot be used if you don't have enough points to use it. The items come in two categories: Board and Tile. Tile items can be used immediately while Board items must be placed on the board and have tiles placed on them to take effect. Placing a board item on a placed board item will remove the placed board item while using up the item being placed. Each player can only carry up to 5 items and will not gain an item if their inventory is full.

Winds of Change

Whenever someone obtains enough points, the board will start to change in a variety of ways.

Lucky Direction

White glowing squares will appear on the edges of the board. If links are made when you place a tile in that area, the player who placed it there will gain 10 bonus points. When the Winds of Change activates, a wheel will appear and the lucky direction area will move to the direction highlighted. For example, if the wheel lands in the north-east spot, the lucky direction will move to the top-right area of the board.

Special Squares

When the Winds of Change activates, special squares will spawn in random spots.

Item Squares

When someone places a tile on a space with an item square, they will gain an item only if they have enough space in their inventory.

Double Score Square

Any links completed by placing a tile on it will double the points gained to the player making the link.

Random Squares

When a tile is placed on a random square, an effect selected at random will happen. If it lands on a board item, the board item will be placed on a random spot on the board and no one will be able to see where it is until it's activated.

Penalty Square

When a tile is placed on a penalty square, the player who placed a tile on the square will lose points.

Board Expansion

When the Winds of Change activates, more spaces will be added to the board. Where they are added depends on the board and its size.

Game Modes

The game contains 3 game modes that you can play.

Challenge Mode

This is the single player mode. You can play against the CPU in a series of stages in order to practice for multiplayer mode and unlock the majority of your items. You will start on an island and will have to beat five stages against one CPU in order to move on to the sixth stage of the island which is the island itself. In order to win, you must gain a certain amount of points before your opponents. On the island stages (A.K.A Stage n-6), you will face against 2 CPUs. The final stage can only be unlocked if you get all gold medals on all stages. Once you do that, you'll zoom out to reveal that the final stage is the whole world. There, you'll face off against 3 CPUs.

Puzzle Mode

Complete a variety of puzzles to test your skills. There, you'll try to gain enough points to pass using the predetermined board layout, pieces, and items within a number of turns. Once you completed enough levels, you can attempt the challenge level in which you must complete 3 out of 5 puzzles in order to pass. You can obtain the Destruction Spell and Die of Chance in Puzzle Mode.

Multiplayer Mode

Play against other players using Nintendo Wi-fi. You can either play with friends or play a ranked game in Worldwide mode.
