Shouzou Kaga (加賀昭三 Kaga Shōzō) is a video game designer and writer, and former employee for Intelligent Systems before founding his own company and later retiring. Because of his roles and work with the series, Kaga is commonly considered to be the creator of the Fire Emblem series.

Biography

Kaga first began video game development entering a programming contest by Login magazine. His entry, titled "Cosmic Fighter", placed second.[1]

After being hired by Intelligent Systems, Kaga worked on the first five installments of the Fire Emblem series, and was a director from Fire Emblem Gaiden onward. After the release of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, Shouzou Kaga left Intelligent Systems to found his own company, Tirnanog Co. At Tirnanog, Kaga developed Tear Ring Saga Yutona Eiyū Senki and Tear Ring Saga: Berwick Saga, spiritual successors to his work on Fire Emblem; the original Tear Ring Saga was even called Emblem Saga pre-release and took place in the same world as Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. After the release of the first Tear Ring Saga, in 2002, Nintendo sued Tirnanog and Enterbrain; they were found guilty of breaching the Unfair Competition Act, but not the Copyright Act.[2]

Some time after the release of Berwick Saga, Kaga retired from professional game development. However, he still works on games such as Vestaria Saga: The Seven Sacred Circles.
