Magical Vacation is a role-playing video game for the Game Boy Advance, and the first game in the Magical Starsign series. It was released exclusively in Japan on December 7, 2001.
On February 2, 2006 it was re-released as part of the Value Selection series. A version of the game edited to remove multiplayer content was released for the Wii U Virtual Console on August 19, 2015.
Story
During an annual field trip to Valencia Beach, the students of Will-o'-Wisp Academy are ambushed by a group of villainous monsters. Now caught in a war of magic and separated across multiple planes of existence, they must explore the various lands to reunite with their fellow classmates and stop the enigma from fulfilling their goal.
Gameplay
Magical Vacation is a turn-based role-playing game. Players navigate a grid-based overworld, interacting with non-player characters and objects in order to continue the plot. The game's battle system is based around sixteen elemental spirits, which have various strengths and weaknesses against one another; the player is able to pick all but three of the game's spirits upon starting a save file. On a character's turn in battle, the player is able to call corresponding spirits to their side, allowing them to boost their or another party member's magic attack in a following turn; the more spirits summoned, the stronger the attack will be.
The most defining feature of the game is the multiplayer functionality labeled Communication, where two players can link their Game Boy Advance systems using the Game Link Cable accessory. Communication itself has three modes. In Let's Amigo, the players are added to each other's list of Amigos. These Amigos can have their "Mojo" assigned to a party member, allowing that party member to perform the spells that the amigo had learned upon linking. Additionally, registering a certain amount of amigos will provide bonuses to the player. In Let's Hot Spring, the two players can receive stat boosts to their protagonists, as well as upgrades to their respective Ricebird Springs. In Let's Battle, the two players' parties will engage in combat under a special set of rules. Victories in multiplayer battles can provide additional upgrades to the Ricebird Springs.
In the Wii U Virtual Console release of the game, selecting Communication on the title screen instead gives the player magic level 1 for all elements except light, as well as dark magic. Upgrades to Ricebird Springs and the use of Amigo Mojo are entirely inaccessible.
