Release year: 2014
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Compatible: Wii U
Model no.: WUP-028

The Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter is an accessory for the Wii U that allows for players to use Nintendo GameCube Controllers with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the only compatible software. It was released on November 21, 2014, alongside the game and a special edition Super Smash Bros. Nintendo GameCube Controller. The device was also released in a bundle featuring the game and controller.

Although not officially noted, as of the version 4.0.0 firmware update, the Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter is compatible with the Nintendo Switch; however, the console only recognizes the controllers as generic USB controllers.[1][2] According to Reggie Fils-Aimé, the adapter being made compatible with Nintendo Switch was a side effect of the update enabling third-party devices to work with the console.[3]

Features and functionality

The Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter connects to the console using two USB cables, the black plug providing power and the gray one providing the rumble feature (meaning that only the black connector and therefore one USB port are required to use the adapter)[4]. The cables can also be pulled apart to increase the distance the two cables can reach.[4] On the front of the device are four controller ports. While primarily meant to be used with standard Nintendo GameCube Controllers, the adapter is compatible with all of the original system's controllers, including the WaveBird Wireless Controller and the DK Bongos.
