Basic gameplay is the same as that of other games in the series, in that players race on various tracks while using items to aid them in placing first. Up to eight racers can race at once. The game features five cups with four tracks each to start, with five more cups that can be unlocked. In addition to the racing mode, there is a battle mode, where competitors use items against each other in an attempt to pop the most of their rivals' balloons. Up to four players can race or battle using [[Game Link Cable]]s to connect multiple Game Boy Advance systems.
