Gameplay

BoxBoy! stars Qbby, a box-shaped character that the player controls in navigating stages by spawning boxes from him. These boxes are used to solve puzzles either by navigating around or defending against obstacles, such as lasers or spikes, or to access new areas, the goal being to reach the doors at the end of every stage. Reaching the end of a stage earns the player medals, which can be spent in the in-game shop to unlock costumes, music tracks, guides, and challenge stages. Each stage also holds crowns, which can only be obtained by using within a certain number of boxes in each level. If the player dies at any point in a stage, they restart from the nearest checkpoint, which can be done manually by pressing L and R simultaneously. The player can also reset the current stage from the pause menu. Players can also spend a Play Coin for a hint, which can be viewed at any point while in that respective stage until it is cleared or exited.

After creating boxes, done by pressing Y, the player can keep them attached to Qbby, throw them by pressing Y again, or set them in place by pressing down. After placing a box, it can be pushed to another position. If a box is hooked onto a ledge while attached to Qbby, the player can either press down to set the box or detach Qbby if he is in midair, or press Y again to move Qbby where the final box in the chain is. Qbby can only spawn one set of boxes at a time; attempting to create another set after doing so once despawns the current set, which can also be done by pressing X. Each stage also has a box limit, which prevents the player from spawning more than a certain number of boxes per set.

From the world map, the player can access any stage or the shop. Players can also send a demo of the game to another system via Download Play, which can be played until the system is turned off.
