"Spirit Combos" are the key in this full-fledged RPG!
After arriving at the Seaside School, otherworldly creatures called enigmas abduct the Magic Academy's students. Pursuing their classmates, who were taken away one by one, the player embarks on a journey to another world...

Story

During an annual field trip to Valencia Beach Seaside School, the students of Will-o'-Wisp Academy and their teacher Miss Madeleine are ambushed by otherworldly monsters called enigmas. Now caught in a war of magic and separated across multiple planes of existence, they must explore the various worlds to reunite with their fellow classmates, stop the enigmas from fulfilling their goal, and uncover the academy's mysterious history.

Gameplay

Magical Vacation is a turn-based role-playing game. Players navigate a grid-based overworld, interacting with non-player characters and objects in order to continue the plot. The game's battle system is based around sixteen elemental spirits, which have various strengths and weaknesses against one another; the player is able to pick all but three of the game's spirits upon starting a save file. On a character's turn in battle, the player is able to call corresponding spirits, allowing them to boost their or another party member's magic attack in a following turn if that spell is of the spirits' element; the more spirits summoned, the stronger the spell will be. Spirits are free to be used by the player or the enemy, regardless of which side of the field they were called to. Outside of combat, seals can be attached to characters' equipment, improving their resistance to certain elements and also increasing the growth of their own magic.

The most defining feature of the game is the multiplayer functionality labeled Communication, wherein two players can link their Game Boy Advance systems using the Game Link Cable accessory. Communication itself has three modes: In Let's Amigo, the players are added to each other's list of amigos. These amigos can have their "essence" assigned to a party member, allowing that character to perform the spells that the amigo had learned upon linking, though the protagonist can permanently learn that amigo's magic with repeated use. Additionally, registering a certain amount of amigos will imbue the protagonist with love, dark, and eventually light magic. In Let's Onsen, the two players can receive stat boosts to their protagonists, as well as upgrades to their respective Sparrow Onsen. In Let's Battle, the two players' parties will engage in combat under a special set of rules. Victories in multiplayer battles can provide additional upgrades to the Sparrow Onsen, and improve party members' stat growth.

In the Wii U Virtual Console release of the game, selecting Communication on the title screen instead gives the protagonist magic level 1 for all elements except light, and instantly unlocks dark magic. Upgrades to the Sparrow Onsen and the use of amigo essence are entirely inaccessible.
