Story
In distant space, a mysterious robed figure is performing a ritual in front of a large crystal heart, known as the Jamba Heart. Releasing the seal on the heart, it suddenly shatters into Dark Hearts that scatter throughout space; some of these land on Planet Popstar. King Dedede and Meta Knight also observe the falling Dark Hearts across Dream Land, with the former becoming entranced by the dark power of a nearby Dark Heart. Kirby suddenly wakes up after a pink Friend Heart has landed on him, and notices the Waddle Dees carrying food towards Castle Dedede. Kirby then sets out on a journey to stop King Dedede, believing he is responsible. Throughout the adventure Kirby learns the power of using Friend Hearts to charm enemies into allies. The allies defeat the possessed King Dedede, while also finding out a Dark Heart was responsible for turning him evil. Kirby and friends pursue the Dark Heart across Planet Popstar, but also bump into a possessed Meta Knight who they eventually defeat later on.
A giant fortress known as Jambastion then crashlands onto Popstar, with Kirby and friends rushing into it and encountering the Three Mage-Sisters - Francisca, Flamberge, and Zan Partizanne - who are also pursuing the Dark Hearts to revive their "dark lord". They are subsequently defeated, with Zan Partizanne unleashing a self-destruct sequence on Jambastion which Kirby and friends escape from, continuing their pursuit into outer space. The allies visit several planets while on pursuit, then eventually arrive at Jambandra, where The Divine Terminus, the altar containing the Jamba Heart lies. Kirby and friends deal with Zan Partizanne, who is trying to stall them from interrupting the ritual, but the mysterious robed figure eventually knocks her aside. After going into an insane rambling about his banishment and desire to awaken the "dark lord", the priest known as Hyness attempts to attack Kirby and his friends by using dark magic and the sisters' unconscious bodies.
After his defeat, Hyness takes extreme measures and sacrifices himself and the Three Mage-Sisters to the Jamba Heart, hastening the revival of their "dark lord" known as Void Termina. Kirby and friends give chase against the reviving dark lord into deeper space using the Star Allies Sparkler. The allies take on Void Termina, shooting down his weak points using the Star Allies Sparkler while also dealing with the entity's core and soul within his innards at certain points. Eventually, Void Termina is overpowered after one last laser struggle and the summoning of all of Kirby's allies, which results in a massive explosion which Kirby and friends only barely manage to escape from. The allies eventually wake up from unconsciousness in the midst of outer space. Having saved the universe once again from a greater evil, Kirby and friends return back home to Planet Popstar using a Warp Star.
Gameplay
Gameplay is largely based upon that of previous 2D Kirby platforming games, most notably Kirby's Return to Dream Land. In addition to being able to copy enemy powers by inhaling them, Kirby can also have up to three enemies join his side by hitting them with hearts, similar to the Helper system featured in Kirby Super Star; these enemies can be computer-controlled, or controlled by additional players which can drop in our out at any time. In addition to having these enemies fight by his side, players can also combine certain abilities to either enhance the power of an ability or use a special combination attack.[5][1]
