Mother (Japanese: MOTHER, rarely rendered マザー), also known unofficially by fans as EarthBound Zero, is the first game in the EarthBound series, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Despite being a Japan-exclusive release, the game was localized and primed for release by Nintendo of America, and would have been known as "Earth Bound" (note the space). Due to proximity of the end of the lifespan of the NES, it was decided that the game would not be released to North American consumers, and only a few prototype cartridges of the game exist.
Changes made between the Japanese and English releases were present in the Japanese-only re-release contained in Mother 1+2, indicating that the English translation was not the work of a fan, and was an authentic Nintendo product.
