Gameplay
Like all Pikmin games of previous, the basis of Pikmin 3 is to guide Pikmin of numerous different colours around an area, have them team up to swarm enemies and defeat them, and carry treasure back to a spaceship where they can be exchanged for the game's currency, Pokos. Unlike previous games, Pikmin 3 lets the player command up to four captains, who can lead Pikmin, rather than Captain Olimar alone, or Olimar and Louie together.
Additionally, some Pikmin are immune to certain hazards. Red Pikmin, in addition to being above average in attacking strength, are immune to fire. Yellow Pikmin, in addition to being the lightest, and therefore the easiest to throw, are immune to electricity. Blue Pikmin are able to survive in water.
The previous game, Pikmin 2 featured poison-proof White Pikmin, and incredibly bulky Purple Pikmin. These Pikmin have not been outright confirmed to be returning to Pikmin 3, though it has been said in passing that all five old specimen of Pikmin will make a return to Pikmin 3.
Pikmin 3 introduces a new type of Pikmin, Rock Pikmin. These types of Pikmin are able to smash through weak walls and armoured enemies. A flying variety of Pikmin, Pink Pikmin, have also been seen, though details on this variety are yet to be revealed.
