Story
During the opening, it is revealed that Maxwell's parents were travelers who semi-retired and had 42 children. Twins Maxwell and Lily were given magic notebooks that can create any object, though their parents fear that they were becoming spoiled. On one day, Maxwell comes across a hungry old man, and as a prank gives him a rotten apple. The angry man scolds Maxwell for his spoiled nature and places a curse on Lily in which she slowly turns to stone. Maxwell brings her to the farm of his brother Edwin, who tells him that he must collect Starites to remove the curse from his sister.
Gameplay
Using the game's expanded vocabulary compared to the previous installments, the player can type in combinations of words to spawn objects which will solve puzzles to collect Starites and Starite shards. Unlike previous games, which were stage-based, Scribblenauts Unlimited is set in an open world, where players can interact with non-playable characters to partake in challenges.
While the Nintendo 3DS keeps the "space meter" from past installments, the Wii U version does away with this mechanic, instead allowing players to spawn up to 60 objects of any kind at once. The game also keeps the ability to use adjectives like in previous games, while also allowing players to combine multiple objects. The Nintendo versions of the game also feature characters and items from Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda as spawnable objects; while in North America and Australia these objects are only in the Wii U release, the later European release features these contents in both versions.
The Wii U version of the game features co-operative multiplayer, allowing up to three additional players (using Wii Remotes) to take control of objects in the game. Finally, the Wii U version features an object creator which allows players to create custom objects with custom properties. These objects can be uploaded online and shared with other players.
