amiibo are a line of interactive "toys-to-life" products created by Nintendo for use in a variety of games. amiibo are comparable to products like Skylanders or Disney Infinity, using near-field communication technology to communicate with compatible systems and access content in games. Although originally launched as figures, amiibo cards were later released starting with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. The line was originally launched for use with Wii U software, using the Wii U GamePad's built-in NFC reader/writer. Later on, amiibo support was added to New Nintendo 3DS systems natively, while a peripheral was released for original Nintendo 3DS family models. The Nintendo Switch family of systems also supports amiibo natively.[1]

Production
Nintendo have attempted a similar concept to the amiibo platform in the past: the e-Reader, a peripheral device for the Game Boy Advance released in 2001 that could scan special cards to unlock exclusive content in games. While fairly successful in Japan, the e-Reader was discontinued only one year after its release in the west. Nintendo was approached by Toys for Bob and its parent Activision with a deal to be a partner for their in-development Skylanders franchise, though Nintendo would turn them down.[2] In 2013, Nintendo would first experiment with making use of the Wii U GamePad's NFC features in games with Pokémon Rumble U, which was released alongside a series of Pokémon figurines in a similar method to other games using this style of figure.
During their financial briefing in March 2014, Nintendo revealed their in-development NFC figurine platform, codenamed "NFP" ("Nintendo Figure Platform" or "NFC Featured Platform"), stating that the figures would be compatible with multiple games and that they would feature data that would tell the system what the figure is, as well as that more information would be revealed at E3 2014. During their Nintendo Digital Event that year, Nintendo fully unveiled the product line, now called "amiibo", with the debut of the first figures in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Functionality
amiibo are used with compatible software by tapping them onto the NFC reader for compatible hardware. On the Wii U, this is on the bottom right corner of the Wii U GamePad. For Nintendo 3DS family systems, the Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer accessory must be used, while on New Nintendo 3DS systems the NFC reader is built-in under the touch screen. Wii U amiibo support was added with firmware version 5.3.0, while Nintendo 3DS systems were given amiibo compatibility with version 9.6.0. For Nintendo Switch, amiibo support is available from the start. The NFC reader/writers are built into the Joy-Con (R) and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.[1]
When an amiibo is registered for the first time, the player can personalize their amiibo by designating an owner and giving it a nickname. An amiibo can be used on any person's device, though the data on the amiibo is unique to that figure and is recognized as such by the hardware.
Games compatible with amiibo can use them in two different ways:
The hardware only reads the data on the amiibo to unlock bonus content in compatible games. | |
The hardware reads the data on the amiibo to unlock content in compatible games, and saves data from the game onto the amiibo itself. Data from only one game can be saved onto any amiibo at one time, and must be deleted in order to save data from another game. |

Super Smash Bros.
This section is a short summary of the Super Smash Bros. amiibo. SmashWiki features a more in-depth article. |
The Super Smash Bros. line is the first series of amiibo be released, based upon Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and released alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on November 21, 2014. The 3DS version received amiibo support on February 10th, 2015, with support for the NFC reader being added on June 14, 2015. The line consists of figures depicting each of the game's playable characters. These amiibo have been released over the course of several waves, the exact number and the contents of each varying by region. The Super Smash Bros. series is the largest line of amiibo figures, with a total of 62 as of July 2017.
With the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, additional Super Smash Bros. amiibo figures have been released, depicting the game's new playable fighters alongside those that did not appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. The first new wave of figures was released alongside the game in December 2018.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
On April 28, 2016, a Super Smash Bros.-themed amiibo diorama display was released exclusively in Japan. The display is designed after the Battlefield stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, features two elevated platforms, and comes with a Smash Ball prop. The display can also be folded in on itself.[7]
Super Mario
This section is a short summary of the Super Mario amiibo. Super Mario Wiki features a more in-depth section. |
The Super Mario series is the second series of amiibo to be released. The series released alongside Mario Party 10, on March 20, 2015, and consists of six main amiibo figurines depicting six of the major Mario characters. Later, in June 2016, it was announced that a second wave of Super Mario figurines would be released, alongside the launch of Mario Party: Star Rush in November.[8] Finally, two additional figures have been released, accompanying Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions.
The Super Mario line also features two "limited edition" amiibo; Mario - Gold Edition was released alongside the first wave of amiibo, while Mario - Silver Edition was released later, on May 29, 2015.

Splatoon
This section is a short summary of the Splatoon amiibo. Inkipedia features a more in-depth article. |
During the Splatoon Direct, it was confirmed that there would be a Splatoon amiibo series. The first set of amiibo consists of three amiibo figures initially released alongside the game in May 2015. While the Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl amiibo are both available individually, the Inkling Squid amiibo is available only in the Splatoon three-pack set in North America, and exclusively as part of a game bundle in Europe; in Japan all three amiibo were released individually.
Later, it was announced that the characters Callie and Marie would be receiving amiibo figures. The two figures will be released in July 2016; in North America they are only available as a bundle pack, while in other regions they will be released individually. Color variants of the initial set of amiibo were also revealed, to be released on the same day. As before, while the Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl were released individually in all regions, the Inkling Squid is only available in a three-pack bundle in North America, while in all other regions it will be available individually.
Even later, it was announced that three additional Inkling amiibo would be released alongside Splatoon 2. Unlike previous waves, all three amiibo were released individually in all regions.[3]

A pair of amiibo dioramas have also been released alongside the second set of amiibo, in July 2016. One depicts the Kelp Dome stage, while the other is a Squid Sisters concert stage. For the latter, a New Nintendo 3DS system can be placed under the diorama so that the top screen fits in the place of the prop screen.[13]
Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary
Two special amiibo have been released for the thirtieth anniversary of Super Mario Bros., both depicting an 8-bit Mario with both his classic and modern color schemes.[14]
Yoshi's Woolly World
This section is a short summary of the Yoshi's Woolly World amiibo. Super Mario Wiki features a more in-depth section. |
The Yoshi's Wooly World amiibo were released alongside the game in June of 2015 in Europe, and October in other regions. These amiibo are unique in that they are yarn plushes rather than plastic figures, with the NFC chip inside the bottom of the figure itself rather than using a base. Three amiibo were released, in three different colors (green, pink, and light-blue).
A "Mega Yarn Yoshi", a larger Green Yarn Yoshi, was later released,[15][16] The Mega Yarn Yoshi has the chip built into its foot. In addition, a portion of the box can be cut out and made into a stand for it.
During the September 1, 2016 Nintendo Direct, a yarn Poochy amiibo was announced. This amiibo was released alongside Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World in February 2017.[17]

Animal Crossing
This section is a short summary of the Animal Crossing amiibo. Nookipedia features a more in-depth article. |
Cards
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer was released alongside the first series of amiibo Cards, released in series rather than waves, and the first line of amiibo to not be released as figures.[19] Each pack contains six cards, with one special card per pack. Four series of cards have currently been released, with 100 cards each. In addition to these, the Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival bundle contains three exclusive cards: Stitches, Goldie, and Rosie. Finally, a promotional Isabelle card was distributed in the September/October 2015 issue of Character Parfait[20], a Japanese Nintendo-themed magazine targeted at young girls. Each card in these sets features the animal, their birthday, the card number, the type of animal they are, their star sign, a dice value, and a hand sign (rock, paper, or scissors).
For the 1.4 update for Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a new series of Animal Crossing amiibo cards, Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo!, were released in November 2016 in most regions and in December in North America. This set features 50 cards[17], distributed at six per pack.
In Japan and Europe, in addition to the Welcome amiibo! series, another series of six Animal Crossing cards were released in collaboration with Sanrio in November 2016.[21][22] Over four years later, the Sanrio Collaboration Pack would be released in America on March 26, 2021, exclusively at Target stores. In Japan, these packs contain 2 cards and a special promotional seal, while for the international release, each pack contains all six cards.[23][24]

Notes
- A transformable Arwing amiibo that would turn into the Walker was in development at one point, with the intent of releasing it alongside Star Fox Zero. While the product reached the prototyping stage, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, it was cancelled as Nintendo couldn't make it into a product that would meet child safety standards.[62]
- In an E3 2014 interview, Shigeru Miyamoto would state that Nintendo had been considering methods to distribute custom amiibo based on users' Mii characters, adding that an amiibo for his Mii exists.[63]
