Kirby's Epic Yarn is a 2D platforming game in the Kirby series. It was also the first Kirby game released on a home console for 7 years, with the last being Kirby Air Ride, and the first console platforming Kirby game since Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. However, the game does not have several of the traditional gameplay mechanics of previous Kirby games.

The game was initially developed as an original IP with the main character "Fluff", but was reworked into a Kirby game at Nintendo's request when the developers found that the game wasn't that fun.[1]

Go behind the seams with Kirby in his latest adventure!

Kirby's first console platform game since the Nintendo 64 days introduces an amazing new look based on animated yarn and a world of cloth and textiles. The creative approach is woven directly into the game play and allows the ever-morphing Kirby to take on a variety of new forms. A simultaneous two player mode will have players of all skill levels enjoying this one-of-a-kind experience.

  • The look of the world is stunning, but it's also interactive. Pulling on stray threads might reveal hidden areas. When Kirby literally goes behind the scenes, the virtual fabric warps and bends to show his location.
  • Thanks to his versatile yarn composition, Kirby can take on a variety of forms both in his common actions and when he transforms into powerful vehicles. When Kirby dashes, he zips around as a car. In water, he turns into a submarine. At times he can even transform into a massive robotic tank, a UFO and other vehicles.
  • Two players can play through the entire game together.
  • Beads and collectible items are scattered throughout the environments for players to find.

When Kirby incurs the anger of a sorceror, he is transported to a world made completely of cloth and yarn! Guide Kirby through uniquely crafted levels in Patch Land, taking on a variety of forms in his common actions and transforming into powerful vehicles. Prince Fluff can also aid in the adventure with a 2nd player!

Story

The game starts in Dream Land, where rumors have been going around of a sorcerer turning people into yarn. One day, Kirby comes across a tomato and inhales it, enraging the sorcerer, who states that it is his magic Metamato. The sock around his neck glows and sucks up Kirby, dropping him in a land made of fabric and turning his body to yarn. He also finds a yarn monster chasing another yarn person, and when he tries to inhale the monster finds that he can no longer do this. Instead, his body suddenly turns into a car shape and he drives away with the stranger.

The stranger introduces himself as Prince Fluff, and explains to Kirby that he is in Patch Land, which has been torn apart by Yin-Yarn, the sorcerer. A monster then tries to eat Fluff, but Kirby smashes it, revealing a piece of "magic yarn" which stitches two pieces of Patch Land back together. Kirby decides to help Fluff on his quest to recover the remaining pieces of magic yarn to restore Patch Land and stop Yin-Yarn.

Gameplay

While this game is still a 2D platformer, because Kirby is made of yarn in this game, he lacks his usual inhaling and flying abilities. However, swallowing the Metamato instead has given Kirby the power to transform his yarn body. Kirby can turn into a parachute by holding the jump button to slow his fall, turn into an anvil by pressing down in the air to ground pound, and turn into a car by double-tapping the move buttons to run. Kirby also has a whip-like attack, which he can use to grab enemies and throw them, or grab stage objects to uncover secrets or progress. Occasionally, the player will find a Metamortex, which will transform Kirby into a new form with its own abilities.

Throughout each stage are beads, which can be collected to increase the rank given at the end of the stage. As Kirby's Epic Yarn lacks the normal life system and health bar of other Kirby games, when the player falls into a pit or is hit by an enemy, they instead lose beads. The player can use beads as currency to purchase furniture and wallpaper to customize their apartment, and can decorate other apartments to make new tenants move in, unlocking bonus challenges. Each stage also features two pieces of furniture and a music track which can be collected.
