Pikmin is the first video game in the Pikmin series released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001.

The game was originally created as a demo of the GameCube's processing power featuring 128 individually moving Marios onscreen. It was later decided that it would not be a Mario game and became a game called Adam and Eve, where the player essentially plays God over two creatures that eventually spawn a civilization. However, this idea was scrapped, and it then developed into what Pikmin is today.

Story

Captain Olimar is traveling through space on his ship when he is struck by a meteor, his ship crashing on a nearby planet. The following morning he finds his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, was blasted apart upon during entry, his ship's parts scattered across the surface. While searching for his ship parts, Olimar discovers a native species his calls "Pikmin", which he uses to help defend himself and find his ship parts. Olimar must now find the pieces of his ship within 30 days or his space suit's life support systems will fail.

Gameplay

The game features the titular characters, Pikmin. Olimar, the game's main character, uses the Pikmin to help clear obstacles, carry parts to his ship, defeat enemies, etc. He does so by either throwing them with the A button, or moving them with the C stick (control pad on Wii version). In order to make more Pikmin, they must carry pellets of necter and enemy carcasses back to their "Onions" which then spit out Pikmin seeds and then they grow into pluckable Pikmin sprouts. In the game there are several obstacles only certain types of Pikmin can handle. There are 3 types of Pikmin in this game.

Red Pikmin: Red Pikmin are fire resistant and can do more damage to enemies then the others. Unlike the others Red Pikmin have carrot shaped noses.

Yellow Pikmin: Yellow Pikmin can handle bomb rocks. Bomb rocks are used to blow up stone walls and do massive damage to enemies. They also can be thrown higher and farther then others. Unlike the other pikmin they also have large pointy ears.

Blue Pikmin: Blue Pikmin can survive in water, which is very useful. This is because they have gills on their heads, which resemble mouths. They also attract enemies more then the other Pikmin.
