Kirby's Return to Dream Land (released in Europe and Australia as Kirby's Adventure Wii) is a game in the Kirby series that was released for the Wii in 2011. The game was in development since the release of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards in 2000, with multiple builds of the game being scrapped as development began for the Nintendo GameCube and later was pushed back to the Wii. The game reintroduces typical Kirby gameplay elements from older games in the series.
Story
Kirby, a Waddle Dee, King Dedede, and Meta Knight are shown on Pop Star in the opening cutscene of the game, when a interdimensional rift appears in the sky and a large ship passes into Dream Land, and rapidly disintegrates, losing five of its parts as well as 120 energy units called "Energy Spheres". Kirby, as well as the other characters, enter the intact hull and find the supposed owner of the ship, Magolor, who wishes that Kirby find the five missing components to the ship, now scattered all across Pop Star, as well as the Energy Spheres. Kirby agrees and goes out to find the five parts.
Gameplay
The gameplay is typical of other Kirby platforming games, with side scrolling levels divided into stages. The stages consists of several enemies, and occasionally a mid-boss. The last stage of the level is always a boss stage in which the player must defeat the boss to collect the piece of the Lor Starcutter in that world. Throughout the stages, Kirby will have to collect Energy Spheres, which will unlock various copy ability rooms, challenges, and sub-games in the Lor Starcutter.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land supports four-player cooperative multiplayer, allowing up to three additional players players to join and leave at any time. While the first player can only control Kirby, the other players can play as Waddle Dee, King Dedede, and Meta Knight, or with one of three additional different coloured Kirbies. While Kirby retains his ability to inhale enemies and copy their powers, the other characters all have their own unique gameplay traits. Each player shares the same life counter, and while the other players can use Kirby's lives to return if they die, the level must only be restarted if Kirby dies.
In addition to new Copy Abilities, this game also introduces Super Abilities, which are time-based Copy Abilities that can be used to break obstacles that would normally be unbreakable. If all obstacles are destroyed a rift opens which allows the player to enter an autoscrolling section that ends with a boss battle.
