Kirby's Epic Yarn is a 2D platforming of the Kirby series. It was also the first Kirby game released on a home console for 7 years, with the last being Kirby Air Ride, and the last main series Kirby game on one for 10 years. However, the game does not have several of the traditional gameplay mechanics of previous Kirby games. The game was initially developed as an original IP with the main character "Fluff", but was changed into a Kirby game at Nintendo's request when the developers found that the game wasn't that fun.[1]
Blurb
Story
The game begins with Kirby walking through Dream Land when he finds a tomato. Kirby eats the tomato, but a sorcerer named Yin-Yarn appears, enraged that Kirby ate his Metamato, and sucks him into a portal through the sock around his neck. Kirby is transported to the world of Patch Land, a world made entirely of yarn and fabric, and finds that he too is made out of yarn. Kirby saves a young boy from being attacked by a monster, who turns out to be the prince of Patch Land, Prince Fluff. The prince explains to Kirby that Yin-Yarn had previously broken Patch Land into six pieces, and Kirby must now recover the six pieces of Magic Wool to restore Patch Land and have a hope at returning to Dream Land, while Yin-Yarn is conquering Dream Land by turning it into yarn.
Gameplay
While this game is still a 2D platformer, because Kirby is made of yarn in this game, he lacks his usual inhaling and flying abilities. However, swallowing the Metamato instead has given Kirby the power to transform his yarn body. Kirby can turn into a parachute by holding the jump button to slow his fall, turn into an anvil by pressing down in the air to ground pound, and turn into a car by double-tapping the move buttons to run. Kirby also has a whip-like attack, which he can use to grab enemies and throw them, or grab stage objects to uncover secrets or progress. Occasionally, the player will find a Metamortex, which will transform Kirby into a new form with its own abilities.
Throughout each stage are beads, which can be collected to increase the rank given at the end of the stage. As Kirby's Epic Yarn lacks the normal life system and health bar of other Kirby games, when the player falls into a pit or is hit by an enemy, they instead lose beads. The player can use beads as currency to purchase furniture and wallpaper to customize their apartment, and can decorate other apartments to make new tenants move in, unlocking bonus challenges. Each stage also features two pieces of furniture and a music track which can be collected.
