Story
Mega Man X is set in the year "21XX", around one century after the original Mega Man series. An archeologist named Dr. Cain discovers the laboratory of Dr. Light, who, according to the notes left behind, had made a major breakthrough. Cain discovers a capsule containing a robot named "X", designed with the capacity to think and feel for himself. Using Light's old notes, Cain is able to copy his design for X and create a series of "Reploids", robots with the same thought capacity as X. Over time, however, several of these robots start to turn "maverick", committing crime and attacking people. In response, a military force known as the Maverick Hunters is established, with the task of finding and eliminating rogue Reploids, led by Sigma, a Reploid using Cain's latest designs and thought to be immune to any issues. However, some time later, Sigma goes maverick as well, believing humans to be inferior and limiting the capabilities of Reploids, and takes many of the other Maverick Hunters with him. X decides to join with Zero, the new leader of the Maverick Hunters, in fighting against Sigma.[1]
Gameplay
Mega Man X retains much of the gameplay of the original Mega Man titles for NES, in that the player must clear eight stages by jumping across obstacles and shooting enemies, and must defeat a boss at the end, which allows Mega Man to obtain their weapon to use in other stages. Completing a stage gives the player a password based on their current progress.
While X has most of Mega Man's abilities, excluding the slide move, X also has the ability to jump off of and slide down walls, which can be used to reach higher places. In addition, in certain stages the player can find capsules left behind by Dr. Light, which give Mega Man an armor upgrade that enhances his abilities and gives him new ones, such as the ability to dash. Certain stages also feature Ride Armors, mechanical suits of armor that attack with punches.
