Overview
Main games
Bayonetta is a series of hack-and-slash games featuring over-the-top combat and scenarios, referred to by PlatinumGames as "climax action".[1][2] The original Bayonetta was released in 2009 as part of a publishing deal between PlatinumGames and SEGA.[3] A second game was later announced in 2014, funded and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. Finally, a third game was announced for release exclusively on Nintendo Switch, once again published by Nintendo.
Other games
In 2015, SEGA announced that a Bayonetta pachislot game would be released.
8-Bit Bayonetta is a retro-stylized 2D sprite-based game. The game was originally announced in 2010 as a new entry in the franchise titled Angle Land as an April Fools' joke.[4] However, the game would later be released in February 2015, accessible on PlatinumGames' website on their 404 error page. The game was later released through the Steam platform in March 2017.
Other media
In 2013, an anime film titled Bayonetta: Bloody Fate was released. Produced by Gonzo, the film is largely a retelling of the events of the first game. Accompanying this in Japan was a two-part manga adaptation of the film released through Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in its December 2013 and January 2014 issues.[5]
Other appearances
Bayonetta was released as a downloadable character for the multiplayer modes of Anarchy Reigns.
In The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta, Jeanne, and Rodin can be unlocked as secret heroes by earning specific achievements; players can also enter a cheat code to unlock Bayonetta automatically.
Bayonetta also appears as a downloadable playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, as the character chosen to be included in the game based on the results of the Super Smash Bros. Figher Ballot. While her main appearance is based on her Bayonetta 2 design, her original Bayonetta design is included as an alternate costume; in addition, one of her other alternate colorations is based on Jeanne. Bayonetta was released in a bundle with the Umbra Clock Tower stage, based on the opening of the original game, and several Trophies based on other series characters.
