The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an open-world 3D installment in The Legend of Zelda series, released for both the Wii U as the final first-party title for the system[4] and as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch in March 2017[1]. Originally stated to be in development in 2013, the game was officially revealed at E3 2014 with a 2015 release window, but was delayed to 2016 due to new ideas being implemented during development, and was later delayed again to 2017 to launch on both the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Like The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds before it, the game is intended to challenge the conventions of the series.
The game was released alongside a set of five amiibo. The Nintendo Switch version of the game also launched with two special editions. The standard Special Edition is packaged with a copy of the game, a full map of Hyrule, a Sheikah Slate carrying case for the Nintendo Switch system, a Sheikah Eye collectible coin, and a CD containing 24 songs from the game's soundtrack. The Master Edition, in addition to the Special Edition contents, also comes with a Master Sword of Resurrection statue.[5]

Now on Nintendo Switch, your journey is freer and more open than ever. Take your system anywhere, and adventure as Link any way you like.
Story
At the beginning of the game, Link is awakened in a chamber by a female voice, after being in a deep sleep for 100 years. During this time, a monster called the Calamity Ganon appeared and ravaged the land of Hyrule. As it could not be defeated, it was instead sealed inside Hyrule Castle. However, the Calamity Ganon's power continues to grow, and if not stopped it could destroy the entire world.[6]
Gameplay
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first open-world game in The Legend of Zelda series since the original title, and the first such 3D title. Link is able to travel anywhere in the world at any time.
Rather than give Link a set of equipment at the start, the player must instead find weapons and clothing across the world, which alter Link's stats in various ways and can even give him various effects such as cold resistance. The weapons that the player can pick up include melee weapons and bows, which have limited uses and will break after a certain period of time. Materials can also be found across the world, which include food items that restore Link's health and other objects that can be used to upgrade items and equipment. Food can also be cooked to restore more health, and some recipes have added bonus effects.
Link can use the Sheikah Slate to look at the map and mark locations on it. Throughout the game the player can find Sheikah Towers, which increase the amount of the map that is filled in by giving him the map information for that region of Hyrule. The Sheikah Slate also gains various runes that can be used to interact with objects, such as using magnesis to pick up metal objects or using bombs. In some instances, the player will enter into a slow-motion state, allowing them to more easily attack enemies. Enemies are also given a health bar.
Both versions of the game will also be compatible with amiibo. Scanning the Wolf Link amiibo once per day allows the player to summon Wolf Link into the game as a partner character; by default he has three hearts, which can be increased by saving Cave of Shadows data from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD onto it. By scanning other The Legend of Zelda amiibo, the player can unlock random items in the game, as well as a treasure chest with a rare item.[7] The game also supports the three new amiibo announced to be released with the game, though it is unknown what these will do.[8]
The gameplay of Breath of the Wild is identical across both platforms, with the Nintendo Switch version only having a higher resolution and sound quality.[9]
Development
A new The Legend of Zelda title for Wii U was originally announced in the January 2013 Wii U Direct. Eiji Aonuma stated that the focus of development for this title was to "rethink the conventions of Zelda".[10] The first trailer for the new game was showcased during the Nintendo Digital Event @ E3 2014, where it was announced that the game would be released in 2015.[11] The first look at gameplay was showcased during The Game Awards 2014.[12]
In March 2015, Aonuma announced that, because the developers were still working on implementing new ideas, The Legend of Zelda for Wii U was not set for release in 2015.[13] In the November 2015 Nintendo Direct, it was announced that the game would be released in 2016.[14] However, Nintendo's financial release for the 2015-2016 fiscal year revealed that the game had once again been delayed to 2017[15], as well as announcing that the game would be simultaneously released for both Wii U and Nintendo's next console, at the time codenamed "NX".[16]
