The Sega Master System (often abbreviated as SMS) is a video game console created by Sega. It was first released in 1985 in Japan as the Sega Mark III, 1986 in North America, and 1987 in Europe. It was a competitor to the Nintendo Entertainment System, but it ultimately did not meet the same success as the NES.
In 2008, Sega began releasing several Master System games on the Wii's Virtual Console service. There are currently 17 titles available for download.
