Xenoblade Chronicles is a series of role-playing games created by Tetsyua Takahashi and Monolith Soft, and released by Nintendo. Xenoblade Chronicles is the third set of games comprising the larger "Xeno" meta series, spanning Xenogears and the Xenosaga series. Similar to other RPG series, while the worlds, characters, and stories of the Xenoblade Chronicles games are unconnected, they share many common themes and elements that link them as a series. According to Takahashi, the "Xeno" prefix is used as a means of identifying his games and as a reference to Monolith Soft's previous works.

Overview

Main series

The Xeno franchise began with Xenogears, which began development as a rejected premise for Final Fantasy VII. The game was originally planned to be the first release in a six game series, but plans for the later games were scrapped due to the developers leaving Square, the owners of the game. The team then formed Monolith Soft and, under Namco, developed the Xenosaga series, a spiritual successor to Xenogears. Xenosaga was also planned to be six games, but was cut down to three due to the first game underperforming on release.

Monolith Soft was later bought by Nintendo and made a first-party developer. During development of Disaster: Day of Crisis, Tetsuya Takahashi had the idea to develop a new game set on the backs of two gods, and while originally intended to be released as an original game Satoru Iwata suggested it be changed to Xenoblade to reflect the past games and Takahashi's hard work. The Xenoblade series currently spans three games, the first of which also receiving a New Nintendo 3DS port and Switch remake.

Other appearances

Shulk, the protagonist of the original Xenoblade Chronicles, appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and would return for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His appearance in this title has resulted in him receiving an amiibo figurine based on his appearance, which can unlock content in other games such as costumes based on his likeness in Super Mario Maker, as well as Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. Following this, Pyra and Mythra, two of the core characters of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, would be made playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of that game's downloadable content. A costume for Mii Fighters designed after Rex, the main protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can also be obtained by purchasing the original Fighters Pass.

Project X Zone 2 features Fiora from Xenoblade Chronicles as a playable character, paired with KOS-MOS from the Xenosaga series. Metal Face, a major antagonist from the original Xenoblade Chronicles, also appears as an enemy.

As a special promotion for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a quest allowing players to obtain a set of equipment based on the appearance of Rex was made available in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
