Level-5 Inc. (株式会社レベルファイブ Kabushiki-gaisha Reberu Faibu) is a Japanese video game developer and publisher. Based in Fukuoka, Japan, many of the company's titles are published by Nintendo overseas. According to president Akihiro Hino, the name "Level-5" refers to the actual term "Level-5", the highest possible mark on Japanese report cards, and their ambition to create "five-star" games.
History
Level-5 was initially founded by Akihiro Hino and his team from their former employer, Riverhillsoft, in 1998, after making a deal with Sony Computer Entertainment which would allow them to develop for the then-upcoming PlayStation 2.
In 2007, Level-5 would release in Japan Professor Layton and the Curious Village, their first self-funded and self-published title. From this point on, Level-5 would self-publish all of their future titles in Japan, while for international retail releases Nintendo would handle publishing duties.
In October 2015, Level-5 and Dentsu would found Level-5 abby in Santa Monica, California, for the purpose of creating media for their western audience.
