Metroid' is a series of exploration-based platforming games created by Nintendo. The series is set on various planets in a space setting, and mostly involves the adventures of bounty hunter Samus Aran, as she battles the Space Pirates to stop them from using the Metroids for their personal gain. The name "Metroid" is derived from the words "metro" and "android".
History
The Metroid series was initially developed by Nintendo R&D1. The inspiration for the game's non-linear action was derived from aspects of both Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, while much of the world and atmosphere was inspired by Ridley Scott's Alien. To date, the main Metroid series has received five main installments.
In 2002, the first 3D Metroid title, Metroid Prime, was released. Metroid Prime would go on to receive two additional games, which have since been compiled into a single "trilogy" release, and three spin-off titles. The main installments in the Metroid Prime series were developed by Retro Studios.
