Metroid is a series of exploration-based platforming games created by Nintendo. The series is set on various planets in a science fiction setting, and mostly revolves around the adventures of bounty hunter Samus Aran, as she battles the Space Pirates to stop them from using the titular Metroids for their personal gain. The name "Metroid" is derived from the words "metro" and "android".
History
The Metroid series was initially developed by Nintendo R&D1. Unlike other 2D games which focused on linear stages, the Metroid series provides a single, large world with various hidden secrets to upgrade Samus in order to defeat the game's enemies. The inspiration for the game's non-linear action was derived from aspects of both Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, while much of the world and atmosphere was inspired by Ridley Scott's Alien. To date, the core Metroid series has received five main installments.
In 2002, the first 3D Metroid title, Metroid Prime, was released. Metroid Prime would go on to receive two sequels, and three spin-off titles, with a fourth main title currently in development. The main installments in the Metroid Prime series were developed by Retro Studios.
Development
Metroid 64 is an unofficial name describing considerations for a Metroid series game during the Nintendo 64 era.
Attempts may have never actually materialized even as a prototype but it was alluded to during a November 15, 2002 roundtable between IGN, Retro Studios and Nintendo of Japan staff.[1]
Metroid Dread had a long development history until finally being fleshed out and announced for Nintendo Switch via an E3 2021 Nintendo Direct.
