Story
The story of New Super Luigi U is identical to the base game, but without Mario. Luigi, {{smw|Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad are dining with Princess Peach when Bowser invades the Mushroom Kingdom and throws Luigi and the Toads out of the castle, capturing it for himself. The three heroes (joined by Nabbit) must make their way back to the castle to save the kingdom from Bowser.
Gameplay
New Super Luigi U uses the same game world and structure as New Super Mario Bros. U, but with new gameplay elements and features added in addition to a set of brand new stages. Luigi is the title character in the game, and as Mario is not present in the game at all the fourth player character is instead Nabbit, originally introduced in the base version of New Super Mario Bros. U.
The game is designed to be more challenging than New Super Mario Bros. U, and each course has a timer of 100 seconds. All characters also have Luigi's higher jumping height but lower traction. In addition to this, the player controlling Nabbit is unable to use power-ups (any power-ups collected are instead added to Nabbit's 1-up counter at the end of each stage), but is completely unaffected by contact with any enemies and obstacles such as spikes or Munchers.
