Gameplay
Players can compete in a variety of Olympic events as characters from the Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises. In this installment, rather than have set normal and dream events, each event now has a "normal" and "Dream" variation. For events, however, in the Nintendo 3DS version only certain characters can compete in certain events, while in the Wii U version all characters can be used for any event.
The Nintendo 3DS version brings back the adventure mode known as Road to Rio, in which the player's Mii must defeat various characters at events. Also available in the handheld version is Pocket Marathon, in which the Mii runs a marathon, taking a number of steps depending on the number on the Nintendo 3DS's built-in pedometer; StreetPass is also incorporated into this mode, which inserts StreetPassed Miis to cheer the player's Mii on as they run.
Both console versions of the game are compatible with amiibo. Scanning a Mario or Sonic amiibo turns their costumes into Gold Mario and Super Sonic respectively.
