A new paper-crafted Mario adventure unfolds on Nintendo Switch!

The kingdom has been ravaged by an origami menace! Join Mario and his new partner, Olivia, as they battle evil Folded Soldiers, repair the damaged landscape, and try to free Princess Peach's castle from the clutches of King Olly in this comedy-filled adventure, only on the Nintendo Switch™ system.

Master strategic, ring-based battles
Line up scattered enemies and plan your attack to maximize damage with the new, ring-based battle system that requires both puzzle-solving skills and a quick wit.

Mario and Luigi receive an invitation from Princess Peach to attend an origami festival and excitedly hurry to Toad Town…but something's amiss. After investigating the eerily empty town, the duo finds a fearsome (and folded) Princess Peach—she's been turned into origami by King Olly, ruler of the Origami Kingdom! With five giant streamers under his control, King Olly binds Princess Peach's Castle and transports it to a distant mountain as part of his plan to re-fold the world.

On his journey to liberate Peach's Castle and repair the ravaged paper landscape, Mario meets Olivia, King Olly's sister, and the two join forces to put a stop to Olly's origami onslaught. Even Bowser falls victim to Olly's plot when his minions are turned into origami Folded Soldiers and betray their Koopa king, forcing him to ally with Mario and Olivia!

Battle the Folded Soldiers in ring-based battles that challenge you to strategically line up enemies to maximize damage! Out of battle, Mario can use the arm-extending 1,000-Fold Arms ability in specific spots to interact with the landscape to pull, peel, hit, and more! Join Mario, Olivia, and their companions on a journey of laughter and emotion, thrills, and a whole lot of folding.

Story

Mario and Luigi are invited by Peach to the Origami Festival being held in Toad Town. When they arrive, however, they find the town completely abandoned. Heading to Peach's Castle, Mario discovers that the princess has been folded into origami, and is then dropped into the castle dungeon. After escaping from the dungeon, he encounters King Olly, who has not only folded the princess but also Bowser's minions into his own Origami Soldiers. Olly then summons five streamers, which wrap around the castle and lift it off the ground, moving it to the top of a mountain. Joined by Olly's sister Olivia, Mario must unravel the five streamers surrounding Peach's Castle so that he can confront Olly and prevent him from folding the entire world into origami.

Gameplay

Paper Mario: The Origami King features similar overworld exploration to the first two Paper Mario titles, with the player traveling across the world to different locations rather than the level-based progression of the previous two titles. In addition to the jump and hammer, the player can also toss confetti, which is used to fill the "Not-Bottomless Holes" scattered across the world; additional confetti can be obtained by defeating enemies or hammering objects such as trees or rocks on the overworld. By utilizing Magic Circles scattered across the world, Mario is able to use the "1,000-Fold Arms" ability, allowing the player to manipulate parts of the environment and solve puzzles.

The game uses a new ring-based battle system, in which players must move and rotate segments of the battle area and line up enemies into rows within a limited time and a limited number of movements to maximize damage.[1][2] Lining up every enemy within the limitations grants a 1.5x damage multiplier for all attacks. Alternatively, the player can spend coins to extend the time limit, and have the Toads they have rescued arrange the battlefield Mario's basic attacks utilize his standard boots to jump on all enemies in a row, or hammering all enemies within close range. Upgraded versions of these attacks can be purchased in shops as items, but must be equipped in one of three slots for each weapon type to use in battle, and can only be used a limited number of times before breaking. As with previous games, player attacks will deal increased damage and enemy attacks will inflict decreased damage with timed button presses. Boss battles utilize a variation of this system, with the player having to arrange the battle ring to create a path that leads to an action space in order to attack.
