The Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition (known in Europe and Australia as the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is a miniaturized Super Nintendo Entertainment System featuring a selection of built-in games, and the successor to the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. As the second system in the "Classics" (Nintendo Classic Mini in Europe) label, the system will be released worldwide in September 2017[2][4], and in Japan in October.[3]
Production
The system was originally announced in June 2017.[2] The games included on the system were chosen based on popularity, familiarity, and sales.[6]
According to Nintendo, the initial shipment of Super NES Classic Edition systems for its launch day will be greater than the number of NES Classic Edition systems released through all of 2016.[7] In addition, despite previously stating that further shipments of the system would continue to the end of 2017[8], Nintendo announced that the system would continue to be manufactured and shipped into 2018.[7]
Features
The Super NES Classic Edition is built after the original SNS-001 system (using its North American design for the North American release and PAL design for the PAL release[4]). Like the original NES Classic Edition system, the SNES Classic Edition connects to a television using HDMI, and is powered through a USB-based AC Adapter. The system includes two Super NES Classic Controllers[2]
Hardware
The Super NES Classic Edition uses the same internal hardware as its predecessor. The system uses an Allwinner R16 SoC with 4 ARM Cortex A7 microprocessors and an ARM Mali 400 MP2 GPU. For memory, the console uses a 256MB DDR3 chip and has 512MB of NAND flash memory for storage.[1]
Games
The Super NES Classic Edition features twenty-one built-in titles.[2] Like with the NES Classic Edition and the Nintendo Classic Mini: Famicom, the titles included on each version of the system slightly vary by region:[2][3] All games included on the system released in PAL regions use the original US 60hz releases of the games.[4]
