While Mario will automatically vault over small enemies and obstacles, the player must tap the screen to properly jump, wall jump, and climb up ledges. The longer the player taps the screen, the higher Mario jumps. Mario gains coins by collecting them on the stage, jumping on enemies, and even jumping onto the Goal Pole at the end of the stage.[5] Each stage also features five Pink Coins, which are worth ten coins; collecting all of them in a stage unlocks a new set of Purple Coins that are more difficult to collect, while collecting all of those unlocks a set of even harder to collect Black Coins.[6] All of the coins the player collects in a stage are added to an overall total.[5] If the player falls off the stage or is hit by an enemy as Small Mario, then they are placed in a bubble and moved to a point before the mistake; the bubble can also be used at any point by tapping the bubble icon at the top of the screen. The player can only use the bubble twice per stage, however, before they fail the stage entirely.
The game feature three different gameplay modes. The main mode is World Tour, featuring a similar structure to a normal Super Mario game, in which players go through worlds of four stages each. In Toad Rally mode, players challenge each others' high scores by playing through a given stage and trying to impress as many Toads as possible.[5] Finally, Kingdom Builder allows players to use the Toads they have gathered and spend their coins on accessories and objects to create their own kingdom. Some of the buildings that can be placed unlock minigames, while others unlock new playable characters, such as Luigi (who can jump higher), Yoshi (who can Flutter Jump), and Toad (exclusively available through My Nintendo).[6] As the player collects more Toads in Toad Rally, their Kingdom will level up and will allow them to purchase additional items in the shop using coins they have collected.
Super Mario Run requires a constant Internet connection to play.[7]

Super Mario Run was mostly received well by critics. While the game's gameplay style and controls were mostly praised, some critics and players took issue with the game's requirement for an internet connection and the price point.
According to Tatsumi Kimishima, by March 2017, the revenue earned from Super Mario Run "did not meet [Nintendo's] expectations," attributed to the game using a one-time-pay model rather than the free-to-play model seen in other games, such as Nintendo's later Fire Emblem Heroes.[8]
