The Super Mario Wiki is a collaborative knowledge-base and the NIWA wiki detailing the Super Mario franchise, including its many spin-off games and series (including Donkey Kong, Wario, and Yoshi), other spin-off media, and other content. It also fully covers crossover games, and has partial coverage of franchises such as the Super Smash Bros. series, as well as guest appearances under certain restrictions listed in the wiki's Coverage Policy. It is one of the founding members of NIWA, along with Zelda Wiki and Bulbapedia.
The Super Mario Wiki also hosts The 'Shroom, a newspaper run by the wiki community. Finally, the wiki has its own dedicated forum, Super Mario Boards, where users can discuss wiki matters, the Mario franchise and related games, or any other topics.
History
The Super Mario Wiki was created on August 12th, 2005, by Stephen Shinn (who goes by Porplemontage, the namesake of his original site, Porplemontage Studios), with help from AgentSeethroo (an administrator on Porple's Halopedia site). Originally intended to cover everything about the Mario franchise, the site was soon split into three: MarioWiki, DKWiki, and Wario Wiki (a project that only a limited few could access). There were also several other wikis in the planning stages before the "Wiki Alliance" project was scrapped and all content was returned to the Super Mario Wiki in 2007. The wiki was originally funded by donations, an idea directly taken from Homestar Runner Wiki, but the lack of funds resulted in embedding Google ads from the left (and later the top, bottom, and even the left side) in order for the wiki to continue running. Currently, ads only appear for non-registered users.
During the period in which Bulbapedia and Zelda Wiki were initially in the planning stages for a network of Nintendo wikis, Axomist and Mandy, administrators on Zelda Wiki, also contacted Porplemontage about a possible affiliation, but he refused. In January 2010, Bulbapedia webmaster Archaic made a post on the Super Mario Boards detailing the wiki alliance project (at the time called "Independent Nintendo Wikis"). After a few days, the Super Mario Wiki agreed to be part of the project, becoming one of the three founding members of NIWA.
In August 2014, the Super Mario Wiki, in collaboration with mariocastle.it, launched the Mushroom World Encyclopedia project. Inspired by Bulbapedia's Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis, the Mushroom World Encyclopedia is a multilingual network of wikis based on the Super Mario franchise. Currently the included language wikis are English, German, and Italian.
