The Super Mario Wiki is a collaborative knowledge-base about the Super Mario franchise, extending to Donkey Kong, Wario, and Yoshi. It is driven by a fan-based community, and runs on a wiki (meaning any registered user can edit and create articles). It also fully covers crossover games and franchises such as the Super Smash Bros. series, as well as guest appearances under certain restrictions listed in the wiki's Coverage Policy.
The Super Mario Wiki also hosts The 'Shroom, the community newspaper. Finally, the wiki has its own dedicated forum, Super Mario Boards, where users can discuss wiki matters, the Mario franchise and related games, or any other topics.
History
The wiki was created on August 12th, 2005 by Stephen Shinn (who goes by Porplemontage, the namesake of his original site, Porplemontage Studios), who received help from AgentSeethroo (who was an administrator on Porple's Halopedia site as well). Originally intended to cover everything about the Mario-series, the site was soon split into the MarioWiki, DKWiki, and the Wario Wiki (the latter being a project that only a limited few could access); there were also several other wikis in the planning stages before the whole "Wiki Alliance" project was scrapped and all content was returned to the Super Mario Wiki in 2007.
Additionally, the wiki used to be funded by donations, taken inspiration from Homestar Runner Wiki, but the lack of funds resulted in embedding Google ads from the left (and later the top, bottom, and even the left side) in order for the wiki to continue running. Recently, Stephen made Google ads appear only for guests who use the wiki only for reading info, instead of contributing.
In August 2014, the Super Mario Wiki launched the Mushroom World Encyclopedia project. Inspired by Bulbapedia's Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis, the Mushroom World Encyclopedia is a multilingual network of wikis based on the Super Mario franchise. Currently the only included language wikis are English, German, and Italian.
